This procedure is often used to alter the size, position or configuration of protruding or
abnormal ears. This surgery is often performed on children after the age of five or six to
spare them cruel taunting of classmates.
Minimal discomfort is felt for which we will recommend a mild analgesic. Substantial pain is
unusual. Your ability to hear will be unaffected by the operation.
What is an otoplasty?
This is a procedure to correct prominent, protruding ears.
What is the most common age to have an otoplasty?
This procedure can be performed at any time throughout your life. However, children generally
do best when they have this procedure performed before entering grade school, because of the
social implications of being ridiculed by other children. This is usually around the age of 5 or 6.
How is the procedure performed?
The procedure is done through an incision hidden behind the ear. Depending on what is necessary
(recreation of an antihelical fold, conchal setback, etc), different maneuvers are undertaken.
This will be discussed with you by Dr. Maloney or Dr. Agarwal.
Are there bandages post-operatively?
A head wrap dressing is placed at the end of the procedure. This is generally worn for about
5 or 6 days. Then a headband is worn to support the ears in their new position.
Is an otoplasty painful?
Most patients do not complain of significant pain, just mild discomfort after this procedure.
Are there sutures after an otoplasty?
There are sutures used to close the incision behind the ears.
